Christian Initiation: Formation is provided for adults and children, non-baptized, baptized in another tradition, or baptized Catholics seeking to complete the initiation sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist. Children must be at least seven years old and have at least two years of catechesis.

Matrimony: Engaged couples should contact the office at least six months prior to the wedding date. Couples are asked to to attend a a Marriage Formation Program prior to the Sacrament.

Infant Baptism: Expectant or new parents should contact he office at least two months before the desired date of baptism to complete the one -evening session of instruction required prior to the celebration of the Sacrament.

A Guide to Giving

God leads us to be good stewards of the gifts He has given to each of us and asks us to give Him the first fruits of our labors so that He may share it with His people and bless us. This is the only time in the Bible that He tells us to test His promises.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there my be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

History of Sacred Heart Parish and Church by Lucille Phelps, Historian

In 1860, the United States Federal Census listed 40 persons as residents of Olema. The first settlers mostly Mexicans, followed by the Swiss-Italians, Irish , and later Portuguese.

The parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, Olema, was established in 1891 and in 1892, a frame church was erected on Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Olema, under the pastorate of Rev. J. Valentini.

The Sacred Heart Fathers, Belgian province, took over the Olema parish in 1909 and served for 26 years.

The 13-room parish house, known today as the Old Rectory, was erected in 1911 with two priests in residence who, traveling by horse and buggy or bicycle, served a wide area including Nicasio, Bolinas, and San Geronimo.

The house was often full and also used as a place of rest for visiting missionaries, some of them from Molokai, the leper colony in Hawaii. Its stately palm trees, old rose bushes and quaint remnants of the once-lovely gardens are reminders of its rich history.

In 1914, the Point Reyes Station church, completed under the direction of acting pastor Father Emil. ? Both churches existed for a time. The frame church on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. was decommissioned in 1923.

Long considered a mission church, Sacred Heart Church officially became a parish in 1940.

Father Dermody was given permission to tear down the old Olema church (Our Lady of Lourdes) and the altar was transported to Point Reyes.

In 1987, the Point Reyes church was decommissioned and sold to the Dance Palace Community Center.

Today's Sacred Heart Church in Olema was dedicated in 1968 by Archbishop Joseph McGucken ? Rev. Richard Barron, Pastor.

Contemporary in style, faces the Bear Valley WHAT of the Point Reyes National Seashore and seats over ? A new priest's house was built in 1992.

In the early 1930's, catechism was taught in the Olema Parish House, moving to the Red Barn ?Reyes in the 1940s when release time for children was initiated. Today, there is an active CCD program serving the families of the parish.

Sacred Heart Women's Club, long supporters of the parish, disbanded in 1995 so its members could better serve on parish event committees. The Parish Council and Finance Committee, established in ?, "guide the community in ongoing spiritual ? and assist the pastor in enabling the people ? parish to carry out the work of the Church."

There is a thriving Hispanic community which has, among many contributions, provided a ? grotto on the parish grounds. A parish library officially opened in 1994 featuring an extensive collection of religious and secular books.

Helping Hands is the most recently organized group of volunteer parishioners, assisting in the bereavement process and providing transportation, food, flowers, hospital visits, and written greetings to those who are ill.

History of St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery and Church by Norm Staub, Historian

In 1853 a smallpox epidemic in West Marin killed a number of Indian ranch hands, two children and two sons-in-law of Gregorio Briones, owner of the Rancho Bolinas.

He donated a small plot in a pasture overlooking Bolinas Lagoon for a burial ground. Prior to this, those who died were usually buried on the property where they lived.

Over the years, the burial ground became known as the Briones Graveyard. From the beginning, it had two parts: Catholic and Protestant. When someone died, whichever clergyman was available presided. A recent census documents 170 burials and several unidentified graves.

Don Gregorio died in 1863. In his will, he requested that his heirs make the burial ground into a permanent cemetery. He also requested that a chapel be built so that people could pray for the repose of his soul. For unknown reasons, these requests were not carried out for more than 20 years., although people continued to be buried in the graveyard.

After the Civil War, there was a nationwide surge of temperance and religious fervor. Duxbury Grove 26 of the Ancient United Order of Druids, a national temperance and social organization, was established in Bolinas in 1875.

In 1877-1879 there occurred, in rapid succession, construction of three churches (Presbyterian, Methodist, Catholic) and the opening of four cemeteries (Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Druid) on Horseshoe Hill near Bolinas. This prompted one correspondent to the Marin Journal to christen the surrounding area "Gospel Flat".

The cemetery is probably the oldest active cemetery in Marin. Current restoration work aims to complete a plan laid out by the Sacred Heart Fathers in 1914.

Pablo Briones, the eldest son of Don Gregorio, organized the construction of the church with the aid of the tiny local Catholic population, together with generous donations from the Protestant community.

The arrival of Swiss-Italian and Portuguese immigrants during the next 30 years swell congregation. The church was enlarged w? added 10 feet to its length. It survived the 1906 earthquake with minor damage; a bell tower was added in 1908.

St. Mary Magdalene Church and the cemetery behind it were formally deeded to the Archdiocese of San Francisco in June 1878. It has always been a mission church, serviced by priests from San Francisco ? Sausalito, then Novato until 1909.

At that time, the Sacred Heart Fathers, a missionary group active in the Pacific Islands, came to Olema to build a ? relaxation retreat house for their priests traveling ? and from Europe.

In return, the Sacred Heart priests ? served the widespread parish, called Our Lady of Lourdes, during their tenure. St. Mary Magdalene ? among its four mission churches: Nicasio, San Geronimo, Point Reyes Station and Bolinas.

When the Sacred Heart Fathers left ? in 1935, the parish was divided. Sacred Heart Parish included St. Mary Magdalene ever since. The church is popular with the local inhabitants ? with the the many holiday renters and campers.
